When my wife hatched the idea for us to go to Kauai for our 25th Anniversary, she began planning and researching to gain knowledge about the island. She spoke to friends who had been there. We studied guidebooks. We looked online for recommendations and suggestions. We read reviews, and tried to gain as much knowledge as we could about the island before we got there.
We dug into questions like –
What can’t we miss?
Where should we stay?
What are the best beaches?
Which beaches can you safely snorkel at?
What’s the best place to watch the sunset?
Are there places we should avoid?
How long does it take to drive from Point A to Point B?
How far in advance do we need reservations for an activity?
What’s the weather like at that time of year?
How difficult is that hiking trail?
What is shave ice (not shaved ice)?
Are there really feral chickens everywhere?
And when we arrived on the island, we kept asking those types of questions, and people with experience offered their opinions and ideas. The airport shuttle bus driver. The crew on the sunset dinner cruise. The wait staff at restaurants. The other tourists we met on trails, and while waiting in line for shave (not shaved) ice.
After a few days on the island, our own experiences also informed us in a way just reading or hearing about things never could. With each step, with each experience, with each bit of information, our knowledge of Kauai increased and progressed.
In his second letter, Peter lays out how to gain increasing knowledge about Jesus Christ. Each experience he lists builds on the previous, with the goal of gaining an ever clearer understanding of Christ – becoming more informed about what Jesus is like, what He prioritizes and what He expects of his followers. Peter writes:
Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:5b-8, NLT).
How are you increasing your knowledge of Jesus?
